How Do You Cast ‘Identify’ on a Spaceship?
Have you ever tried to solve a high-tech problem with a low-tech magic wand? That is exactly the kind of hilarious, head-scratching situation our grumpy hero Troll finds himself in today.
In this classic panel from Episode 1, Page 3, Troll and Unicorn have just stepped inside the mysterious “metal cave” embedded in a vine-covered hill. To a pair of celestial travelers accustomed to magical forests and celestial realms, this place makes absolutely no sense. Instead of stone and soil, they are surrounded by cold, curving metal and glowing lights. While the ever-cheerful Unicorn immediately trots down the dim corridor, utterly unfazed by the sudden shift in scenery, Troll is left blinking in pure disbelief.
So, how does a fantasy creature cope with a science-fiction environment? By falling back on the only logic he knows! Troll decides it is time to cast an “Identify” spell. It is a brilliant moment of genre clash—bringing classic fantasy RPG mechanics to bear against what we readers recognize as advanced technology. Whether a magical analysis spell can actually decipher spaceship circuitry remains to be seen, but you have to admire his determination to stick to his roots.
Troll—or Thag, as his father King Angus might call him when he’s in trouble—is a creature of order, or at least he tries to be. Back in his celestial home, he was a keeper of the orbs, a balancer of meteors. He likes things to have clear labels and defined rules. Suddenly finding himself on prehistoric Earth (or “Tera” as some might call it) was bad enough, but this metal corridor completely breaks his sense of order. The “Identify” spell isn’t just a tactical choice; it’s a security blanket for a grumpy guy who desperately wants a manual for his current life.
The composition of this panel does a wonderful job of building tension and scale. By placing Troll in the foreground, wide-eyed and anxious, and showing Unicorn as a small blue figure vanishing into the deep red glow of the corridor, it really emphasizes the vastness of this strange interior. It makes the “metal cave” feel massive, ancient, and deeply mysterious. Grab your spellbooks and keep your eyes peeled!
