Hey, I’m Jonathan, dad to 4 kids and professional software developer. I’m also a comic writer now! Weird story. Let me explain.

I came up with the idea for creating a new comic book when my 10 year old girl and 13 year old boy decided that they wanted to draw some funny pictures and “do a YouTube cartoon” somehow! Of course they had no idea what to do about it.

I liked the idea because I do like watching cartoons! I’ll be honest, I have laughed a lot at online content on YouTube, as well as more professional shows like Rick & Morty or Gravity Falls and so the idea of trying to make a ‘thing’ did intrigue me! I mean at the time, it was just this nebulous sort of idea of getting the kids to come up with ideas and see what happens. So I’d ask the kids for ideas or concepts but honestly, they didn’t have any real input other than my son saying he liked silly humor, Lama’s with Hats, South park and my daughter liked drawing pictures. They just had this general idea of wanting to laugh at some kind of goofy adventurous cartoon thing! “Maybe call it Troll and Unicorn”!

Anyway, my daughter spontaneously did draw something; It was herself and her brother, clinging to my legs! This would come to represent Susie and Timmy in the comic. I personally think that she drew an adorable picture of her and her brother clinging to my legs with this sort of cheeky, lovable irritating loud and obnoxious kid vibe! It was essentially this image sitting on my fridge door that gave me the idea of having Troll with Susie and Timmy clinging to his legs! You’ll see it in the almost last scene of episode 1. After I saw that, I started getting a flood of ideas for this comic….

Check out her adorable pic!

She also drew this after I asked her to imagine what Troll and Unicorn might look like

So that’s the genesis of this thing. Now I am creating a comic! there’s a full episode in the works as of this post with much more to come. I do need to crowd fund it though. My intention is to use Indiegogo or Kickstarter, so I’ll be sharing content online to hopefully inspire some help in getting this into production. With the comic season 1 as the first step and the animated version as the next big step, this project has me pretty excited! It’s turning out pretty good. Welcome to the world of Troll & Unicorn!

Cheers,

Jonathan.
